Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box of German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 can (14 oz) of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • Extra pecans or coconut for garnish
  • Chocolate shavings for garnish
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Beat for 2 minutes until well blended.
  3. Pour the batter into a greased 9×13 inch baking pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  4. Once cooled for about 20 minutes, poke holes throughout the cake using the handle of a wooden spoon.
  5. Pour sweetened condensed milk evenly over the cake, letting it soak into the holes.
  6. For the topping, heat evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter in a saucepan until thickened. Stir in coconut and nuts if desired.
  7. Spread the frosting over the cooled cake and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
